Kuku now as ACI VP: So what?

In a move that’s got everyone in Nigerian aviation talking, Olubunmi Kuku, the Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), has been elected as the Vice President of Airports Council International (ACI) Africa.

So what! Does it change the fact that you’ll still need to arrive early for your flights? Does it mean airport queues will magically disappear? Does it guarantee smoother travels?

But in all seriousness, Kuku’s recent appointment is a big deal for Nigerian and African aviation. As ACI Africa VP, she’s gonna be championing initiatives for safe, passenger-centric airports across the continent. She’s committed to ensuring airports meet international standards for safety and efficiency while driving economic growth and connectivity.

Kuku’s leadership on the global stage now represents Africa on the ACI World Governing Board, overseeing 2,100 airports in 169 countries. She’ll push for investment in infrastructure, safety regulations, and sustainable practices in African aviation.

Back home, her leadership at FAAN has earned recognition, including two safety awards for Nigerian airports. Her tenure has redefined what’s possible for FAAN and Nigerian aviation, showing that with vision, discipline, and innovation, it’s possible to modernize infrastructure, boost revenues, secure airports, and deliver world-class passenger experiences.

Kuku is actually revolutionizing the Nigerian aviation sector with her visionary leadership. As the first female Managing Director of FAAN, she has broken barriers and set new standards in airport management and operations. Her leadership has been marked by transformative initiatives that have redefined operational efficiency and safety in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

This enigmatic woman’s strategic reforms, commitment to capacity building, and emphasis on security have not only enhanced the functionality of the nation’s airports but have also set a benchmark for excellence in the sector.

Under Kuku’s guidance, FAAN has undertaken several initiatives aimed at boosting operational efficiency, safety, and customer experience. These include infrastructure upgrades, introduction of innovative processes, promoting safety and consumer-centricity, and capacity building through training programs for FAAN staff.

Over 3,000 employees have been trained and certified in critical areas including aviation security, firefighting, airport operations, and engineering.

Her achievements have earned international recognition. She was named the Aviation Agency CEO of the Year 2024 at the esteemed NIGAV Awards held in Lagos. This recognition celebrates her exceptional leadership, dedication to excellence, and strategic role in advancing safety and innovation within Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Kuku was also nominated to serve as a Regional Advisor representing Africa on the Airports Council International (ACI) World Governing Board in September 2024 before she was recently elected as the Vice President of ACI Africa, elevating her to a permanent member on the ACI World Governing Board.

Kuku’s tenure has already redefined what is possible for FAAN and Nigerian aviation. Her leadership has shown that with vision, discipline, and innovation, it is possible to modernize infrastructure, boost revenues, secure airports, and deliver world-class passenger experiences.

FAAN generated N343.87 billion between January and November 2023, an 82.5% increase over the previous year. Upgrades of passenger lounges, including specialized spaces for elderly passengers and nursing mothers, have improved accessibility and responsiveness to travelers with reduced mobility.

With her quality eadership, Kuku is transforming Nigerian aviation, making it more efficient, safe, and passenger-centric. Her commitment to excellence and innovation is setting new standards in the aviation industry.

As the visionary woman embarks on her role as Vice President of ACI Africa, she remains dedicated to transforming Nigeria’s aviation sector and uplifting the broader African aviation community.
