The Nigerian Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development has announced plans to concession the management of toll gates at airports to private operators, with the aim of improving efficiency and reducing operational challenges.
This move is part of efforts to implement a fully automated or electronic payment system at all access gates, as directed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
In the meantime, a hybrid payment system that allows both cash and card payments will be reintroduced at all airport access gates, effective March 13, 2026.
Motorists with existing FAAN Go Cashless Cards can continue to use them, and other electronic payment options, including POS terminals and digital channels, will remain available.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festud Keyamo, in a meeting with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), emphasized the need for a seamless and efficient payment system, citing the traffic gridlock caused by the initial implementation of the cashless system.
The concessioning of toll gates is expected to bring in private sector expertise and investment, leading to improved services and revenue generation for the government.
The Ministry is working towards a fully automated payment system, and the hybrid system is seen as a transitional measure to achieve this goal.
