Aviation Minister, Keyamo and FAAN MD, Kuku

Nigeria is set to revolutionize its aviation sector with the ₦712.24 billion upgrade of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, aiming to transform the country into a premier aviation hub in Africa.

The project, part of a broader ₦919.1 billion package, will increase passenger capacity to 30 million annually, connect over 50 airlines to more than 100 cities worldwide, and position Nigeria as a natural transit point for African and global travel.

“We are not just building an airport, we are building a nation,” said Olubunmi Kuku, FAAN Managing Director. “We are reimagining Nigeria’s aviation story, creating a global-standard gateway that elevates every journey and projects national pride.”

The upgrade features cutting-edge infrastructure, including a rebuilt Terminal 1 with upgraded mechanical, electrical, and passenger systems, expanded Terminal 2, and advanced air traffic management systems.

Kuku hinted that the project also includes runway upgrades, apron expansion, and security enhancements, with a focus on sustainability and passenger comfort.

“This is a monumental investment in Nigeria’s aviation sector,” said Festus Keyamo, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development.

“We are committed to transforming MMIA into a world-class airport that meets international standards and drives economic growth.”

The project is expected to be completed in 22 months, creating a world-class airport that boosts Nigeria’s aviation sector and economy.

With its strategic location and growing population, Nigeria is poised to become a major player in the global aviation industry.
