Nigeria sets sights on aviation hub status with MMIA revamp

In a bold bid to transform the country into a premier aviation hub in Africa, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) is poised to spearheading a comprehensive upgrade of Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos.

The ambitious project, backed by a substantial ₦712.24 billion investment, promises to revolutionize Nigeria’s aviation landscape and cement its position as a key player in the global aviation arena.

Addressing the Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative’s Q1 Business Breakfast Meeting, FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, outlined the agency’s visionary strategy, anchored on developing dual hub airports in Lagos and Abuja, modernizing infrastructure, and enhancing safety and regulatory compliance.

“We are not just building airports; we are building confidence — in our systems, our people, and our place in the global aviation map,” Kuku declared.

The MMIA upgrade is a critical component of this vision, aiming to increase passenger capacity to 30 million annually, connect over 50 airlines to more than 100 cities worldwide, and position Nigeria as a natural transit point for African and global travel.

The project encompasses a range of cutting-edge infrastructure upgrades, including the expansion of terminals, runway upgrades, and advanced air traffic management systems.

Kuku emphasized that safety and regulatory compliance remain top priorities, with FAAN working closely with the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to strengthen safety oversight and security frameworks, aligning with global best practices.

“Safety is non-negotiable. We must ensure that our airports meet the highest international standards to inspire confidence among airlines, passengers, and investors,” she stressed

The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) lauded FAAN’s efforts, emphasizing the need for continued investment in human capital development, technology, and sustainable aviation practices.

ASRTI Chairman, Air Commodore Ademola Onitiju (Rtd), in his welcome address, noted, “We are excited by the efforts of the present crop of leaders and policymakers in the aviation sector. The upgrade of MMIA is a timely and welcome development, and we commend FAAN for its commitment to transforming Nigeria’s aviation landscape.”

As Nigeria strives to become a leading aviation hub, industry stakeholders are optimistic about the prospects. With a growing population, strategic geographic location, and increasing demand for air travel, the country is poised to unlock new opportunities for economic growth, job creation, and global connectivity.

The success of the MMIA upgrade will hinge on effective implementation, collaboration between government and industry stakeholders, and sustained investment in the aviation sector.

If executed successfully, Nigeria’s aviation hub status could become a reality, unlocking a new era of prosperity and growth for the country.
