The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative, a prominent aviation sector pressure group in Nigeria, is driving efforts to transform Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) into a world-class aviation hub. At their recent Q1 Business Breakfast Meeting, stakeholders emphasized the need for strategic support to develop strong Nigerian airlines, modernize airport infrastructure, and enhance passenger experience.
FAAN Managing Director, Olubunmi Kuku, also highlighted plans to deploy advanced technologies, including upgraded airfield lighting and the Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control System (A-SMGCS), to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
“We are committed to making MMIA a hub of excellence, and we believe that with the right support, we can achieve this goal,” she said.
The initiative has also called for the development of modern cargo terminals and cold-chain systems to support air freight growth, as well as positioning Nigeria as a Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) hub to unlock greater economic value.
Stakeholders have commended FAAN’s vision for MMIA, emphasizing the need for inclusive stakeholder engagement, regulatory efficiency, and reduced multiple taxation to achieve the desired transformation.
Key proposals include supporting 2-3 Nigerian airlines to become national flag carriers, upgrading airfield lighting, deploying A-SMGCS, and expanding apron and aircraft parking stands.
The initiative also recommends implementing biometric technology, e-gates, and improving transit facilities to enhance passenger experience.
With these efforts, Nigeria is poised to become a major player in African aviation, and MMIA is set to becoming a hub of excellence, driving economic growth and development in the region.
