A new dawn for motorcycle operators as MOUN unveils vision for Lagos’ streets

Comrade Ikuesan

The Motorcycle Operators Union of Nigeria (MOUN) has officially been recognized by the Lagos State Government, marking a new chapter in the history of motorcycle operations in the state. This milestone achievement was celebrated with a stirring speech by Comrade Ade Ikuesan, General Secretary of MOUN and Chairman of the Caretaker Committee of the union.

“Today, we stand at the threshold of a new dawn,” Comrade Ikuesan declared, his voice echoing through the venue. “A dawn where motorcycle operators are recognized, respected, and empowered to contribute to the economic growth of Lagos State.”

The union’s recognition is a testament to the power of collective action and the commitment of the Lagos State Government to supporting the informal sector.

Comrade Ikuesan expressed gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and his team for their unwavering support, acknowledging that MOUN’s recognition is a result of the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for businesses to thrive.

The union’s vision is ambitious: to create a safe, efficient, and sustainable motorcycle industry that benefits not only its members but the entire Lagos community.

And to achieve this, the union plans to implement a range of initiatives, including meticulous registration and digitization of motorcycle operators, insurance schemes, empowerment programs, and traffic management and discipline.

“We will collect and verify data on all motorcycle operators in Lagos, creating a comprehensive database that will aid in crime prevention, immigration, medical emergencies, and tax payments,” Comrade Ikuesan explained. “We will also introduce motorcycle accident insurance schemes, providing financial protection to members and their families in case of accidents,”  Ikuesan promises

The union’s empowerment programs, he said,  will include cooperatives, micro-credit and finance, motorcycle purchase loans, and transition to electric motorcycles.

“We want to empower our members to be successful, law-abiding citizens, contributing to the growth and development of Lagos State,” Comrade Ikuesan said.

On traffic management and discipline, he said MOUN will work with the Lagos State Government to enforce traffic regulations, promote road safety, and ensure that motorcycle operators are aware of their responsibilities.

“We will collaborate with the Police, LASTMA, and other government agencies to ensure that our members are disciplined and respectful of the law,” Comrade Ikuesan emphasized.

He further stressed  that MOUN is not just a trade union, but a partner in governance. “We are committed to working with the government to ensure that our members are law-abiding citizens, contributing to the growth and development of Lagos State,” he said.

The union’s recognition is a significant milestone, but it is only the beginning. As MOUN takes the helm, it is clear that the organization is poised to make a lasting impact on the motorcycle industry in Lagos, promoting a culture of safety, discipline, and prosperity.

The era of chaos and disorder on Lagos’ streets is giving way to a new era of organization, safety, and prosperity. MOUN is ready to lead the charge, and the people of Lagos are eager to reap the benefits.
