The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has commended the Lagos State Government and security agencies in Oyo State for their prompt and decisive response to recent emergencies that threatened the lives and wellbeing of citizens.

In a statement on Friday signed by its Executive Director, Gbenga Soloki, CAIDOV praised the Lagos State Government, LASEMA and other first responders for the swift intervention during the recent flooding across several communities in Lagos.

The organization noted the deployment of emergency teams, evacuation of residents, and distribution of relief materials, which helped reduce the impact on vulnerable groups, especially women, children and the elderly.

“We applaud Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for activating the emergency response plan and for ensuring the visibility of LASEMA and other agencies on ground. Government must now sustain this support with temporary shelters, food, clean water, medical care and financial assistance until affected communities fully recover,” CAIDOV said.

The organization also warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in canals, drainages and road medians, describing it as an act of injustice that puts other citizens at risk. It called on government to accelerate canal dredging, clear drainages, and enforce environmental laws, adding that offenders who build on drainage channels or dump waste must face prosecution.

In the same vein, CAIDOV hailed the Nigeria Police Force, DSS, Nigerian Army, Oyo State Amotekun Corps and community vigilantes for the successful rescue of abducted teachers and school children in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State after 56 days in captivity.

Describing the operation as intelligence-led and professional, CAIDOV said it demonstrates what can be achieved when security agencies collaborate effectively.

“The safe return of these innocent children and their teachers is a huge relief to their families and to all Nigerians. We commend the bravery of our security personnel, including those who neutralized some of the terrorists during the operation. We also demand thorough investigation and swift prosecution of the 8 suspects arrested,” the statement read.

CAIDOV urged the Oyo State and Federal Governments to provide free medical care and psychosocial support to the rescued victims, strengthen security in schools, install early warning systems, and deepen community policing in rural and border areas.

“Flooding and kidnapping are both threats to human dignity. While flooding is natural, the scale of damage is worsened by negligence. While schools should be safe havens, they are now targets. A just and humane society must protect both lives and the environment,” CAIDOV stated.

The Centre reaffirmed its commitment to monitor government interventions and continue to speak against all forms of injustice, violence and abuse.
