The Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has issued a statement to address misconceptions about the state of air navigation safety and landing facilities across Nigerian airports during the Harmattan season.
In a press release signed by Dr. Abdullahi Musa, Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, NAMA emphasized that all navigational aids at Federal Government airports are routinely maintained and calibrated in compliance with international standards.
“Contrary to insinuations that Nigeria’s landing facilities are poorly maintained or unfit for Harmattan operations, NAMA states unequivocally that all navigational aids are routinely maintained, flight-checked, and calibrated in strict compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standards and Recommended Practices,” Dr. Musa said.
NAMA also clarified that the deployment of Instrument Landing Systems (ILS) CAT I, CAT II, or CAT III is determined by operational need, traffic volume, and meteorological data, not by prestige or public perception.
“To suggest that the absence of widespread CAT III systems equates to compromised safety is therefore misleading,” Dr. Musa added.
The agency assured the public that Nigeria’s airports are capable of supporting safe operations during Harmattan conditions and that weather-related delays or cancellations are primarily a function of weather conditions and airline operational decisions.
