Nwakuche is now confirmed prisons’ czar

Sylvester Nwakuche

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as the new Controller General of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS).

This decision follows President Bola Tinubu’s appointment of Nwakuche on December 13, 2024, which came after the retirement of Haliru Nababa.

The confirmation was facilitated by the Senate Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Adams Oshiomhole.

During a plenary session held on Tuesday, lawmakers unanimously endorsed the committee’s report, thereby solidifying Nwakuche’s position as the head of the correctional service.

In announcing the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio emphasized the significant responsibilities that come with this role.

He stated that “to whom much is given, much is expected,” highlighting the critical nature of Nwakuche’s task in ensuring the security and integrity of correctional facilities across Nigeria.

Akpabio expressed optimism that under Nwakuche’s leadership, there would be a marked reduction in jailbreak incidents that have plagued the nation.

This sentiment comes in light of recent events, including a jailbreak where 12 inmates escaped from the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Koton Karfe, Kogi State, resulting in the tragic death of a correctional officer.

As Nwakuche steps into his new role, all eyes will be on his ability to implement effective measures to enhance security within Nigeria’s correctional facilities and to restore public confidence in the system.

The Senate has confirmed Sylvester Nwakuche as Controller General of NCoS amid hopes for improved security against jailbreaks.
