In a vibrant explosion of energy and enthusiasm, Baobab for Women’s Human Rights (BAOBAB) brought its groundbreaking initiative, “Redefining Masculinity: Boys as Champions of Change to End Gender-Based Violence”, to life in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State. The event, supported by the African Women’s Development Fund (AWDF), was a masterclass in empowerment, as teenage boys from diverse public colleges across the state gathered to redefine the narrative of masculinity.
Against a backdrop of infectious excitement, BAOBAB Executive Director, Yeye Bunmi Dipo-Salami, set the tone for the day, challenging traditional notions of masculinity and urging the boys to become allies in the fight against gender-based violence (GBV).
“Our goal is to create a future where boys and men are not only aware of the harm caused by GBV, but are also equipped to challenge and change the norms that perpetuate it,” she declared, leaving the audience in rapt attention.
The interactive sessions that followed were a testament to the power of youthful energy and creativity. With eyes aglow, the students participated in discussions, role-plays, and activities designed to help them explore the impact of GBV and develop practical skills to become agents of change.

But it wasn’t all work and no play!
The event featured a thrilling talent hunt, where students showcased their skills in music, dance, and poetry.
The atmosphere was electric as the boys belted out empowering anthems, their voices echoing through the venue, and their movements telling stories of hope and resilience.
The highlight of the event was the participation of schools such as Harding Model School, Ado Ekiti, Anglican High School, Ado Ekiti, and Eyemote Comprehensive High School, Iyin Ekiti, among others.
The students’ enthusiasm and commitment to the cause were palpable, and it was clear that the message of positive masculinity had resonated deeply.
As the day drew to a close, it was evident that the “Redefining Masculinity” initiative had not only educated and empowered the students but had also brought them joy and a sense of purpose.
The boys left the venue with a newfound understanding of what it means to be a champion of change, and a determination to make a difference in their communities.
The success of this event is attests to the power of collaboration and the potential of young people to drive positive change.
BAOBAB’s vision of a Nigeria where every woman’s voice is heard, every girl’s potential is unleashed, and the rights of all are fully realized, is slowly but surely becoming a reality.
