Maiduguri International Airport is on the cusp of becoming a major regional hub, with its strategic location and upgraded facilities making it an attractive destination for airlines and investors. “Maiduguri is strategically situated; it has that strategic location advantage that airlines can take advantage of,” says Ibrahim Bello, the terminal manager.
The airport’s terminal has undergone significant upgrades, including the installation of digital check-in counters, modern screening machines, and conveyor belts. The facility can now accommodate up to 500 passengers at once, making it an ideal hub for regional operations.
“We can have a regional hub, we can have N’Djamena, Cameroon, we can have Niger as well,” Bello says. “These are border countries, bordering Nigeria through Maiduguri. So, this regional hub can be extended into international routes as well.”
The airport is already seeing significant cargo traffic, with livestock and foodstuff being transported to neighboring countries.
Bello believes that the airport’s cargo potential can be further enhanced, with discussions underway with investors and the Ministry of Livestock.
“We have one of our operators here that has shown interest. It has done its own route analysis. We have been talking about it for years,” he says. “So, they too are at their own level, they are doing it, and we at the station level, we are doing it.”
With its strong security presence and maintained runway, Maiduguri International Airport is ready to take its place as a major regional hub. Bello projects significant passenger traffic, with smaller aircraft like the Embraer or Bombardiers likely to be used for regional flights ¹ ² ³.
