Eruku community escapes bandit attack as hunters, vigilantes repel armed invasion

In a dramatic turn of events on Saturday, fully armed bandits attempted to storm Eruku, in Ekiti Local Government of Kwara State, driving in trucks along the Eruku‑Egbe road while firing sporadically.

The assault, which began around 11 a.m., saw the militants moving from the Eruku‑Egbe stretch toward Koro road, threatening residents and disrupting traffic.

Local hunters and community vigilantes swiftly mobilised, securing key routes from the seminary to Methodist High School and preventing the bandits from entering the town’s centre.

Their coordinated effort forced the attackers to retreat, effectively thwarting the invasion and restoring a sense of calm to the area.

The local hunters confirmed that the bandits were indeed traveling in trucks, shooting indiscriminately, but that the community’s defence measures had kept Eruku secure.

Prominent sons and daughters of Eruku have since appealed to Kwara State Governor, AbdulRazaq Abdulrahman , urging immediate government intervention to bolster security.

They warned that, should the neglect continue, local youths may resort to blocking major roads with burning tyres to press for protection.

The incident underscores the growing reliance on community self‑defence in parts of Kwara State, as residents take proactive steps to safeguard their homes amid recurring bandit activity.

Authorities have yet to comment on the specifics of the response or any planned reinforcement of security forces in the area.
