Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has been released from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following the death of his mother, Alhaja Hajiya Umma, in Cairo, Egypt.

His release comes after El-Rufai’s detention since February 18, 2026, over allegations of financial misconduct and money laundering.

Sequel to the release, President Bola Tinubu has expressed condolences to El-Rufai, describing his mother as a remarkable woman who raised children and grandchildren contributing greatly to Nigeria’s development.

“Losing a mother is a pain unlike any other,” Tinubu said, sharing his own experience of losing a mother, President Tinubu had expressed in a release signed by his head of media, Bayo Onanuga

El-Rufai’s son, Bashir, revealed his father’s release, criticizing the ICPC as “one of the most corrupt agencies” and thanking supporters for their solidarity.

The ICPC had arraigned El-Rufai on a 10-count charge, with his bail application adjourned to March 31, 2026.
