Rights group demands IBB’s arrest

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR) is demanding the arrest and prosecution of former Nigerian military ruler, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, for his role in the annulment of the June 12, 1993 presidential election.

This comes after Babangida’s recent admission of his involvement in the election’s annulment, which the CDHR views as an attempt to downplay his responsibility in the matter.

The June 12 election was widely considered to be free and fair, with Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) winning the majority of the casted votes.

However, Babangida annulled the election, citing electoral irregularities, and instead installed an interim government.

CDHR’s demand for Babangida’s arrest and prosecution is rooted in the organization’s belief that the former military ruler’s actions were a brazen sociopolitical and moral assault on the Nigerian people.

The group views Babangida’s recent admission as an attempt to hoodwink Nigerians into believing that he acted in good faith.

It’s worth noting that Babangida’s annulment of the June 12 election had far-reaching consequences, including widespread protests, human rights abuses, and a significant delay in Nigeria’s transition to democracy
