Abacha debunks IBB’s claim on June 12

Late Gen Abacha

The family of the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has rejected claims by former military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, that Abacha was responsible for the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election.

This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by Mohammed Abacha, son of the late leader, in response to Babangida’s assertions in his newly released memoir, A Journey in Service.

Babangida had claimed that Abacha played a key role in the controversial annulment of the election won by Chief Moshood Abiola. However, the Abacha family dismissed the claim, arguing that Babangida, as the Head of State at the time, had absolute executive power and was solely responsible for the decision.

Mohammed Abacha accused Babangida of attempting to rewrite history and shift blame, stating that his father was merely a senior military officer in the regime, not the decision-maker.

The family called on Nigerians to reject revisionist narratives and uphold historical accuracy, maintaining that Abacha’s contributions to Nigeria’s development should be judged with fairness and objectivity.
