Deposed Oba Aderiye
The sleepy town of Ayegunle in Ekiti State has finally found solace after years of suffering under the reign of Oba Johnson Folorunsho Aderiye, the Alayegunle of Ayegunle Ekiti.
The monarch, who had ruled the town for 27 years, was dethroned and banished into exile by his subjects, who accused him of being vicious, a serial rights violator, and a bare-faced dictator.
The people of Ayegunle, backed by high chiefs in the monarch’s traditional cabinet, rose in unison to stamp out the monarch’s reign of terror. The decision to dethrone Oba Aderiye was not taken lightly, but the overwhelming majority of the town’s residents had lost faith in his ability to lead with integrity and respect for human rights.

According to a press statement signed by High Chief Ilesanmi Olugola, the Eesa of Ayegunle Ekiti, and other high chiefs, Oba Aderiye’s reign was marked by gross human rights violations. The monarch was accused of illegally detaining scores of young people in the community, including some high chiefs, at various police stations in the state.
The detention of the youth leader, who was allegedly beaten to stupor before being locked up, sparked widespread outrage and protests.
The troubles in Ayegunle began when the youths of the community staged a peaceful protest against one of the monarch’s cronies, the Olori Awo of Ayegunle community, Ojo Obasua. Ojo was alleged to have taken pictures of one of his concubines and threatened to post them on social media because the lady in question wanted to expose him for impregnating a minor.
Instead of showing remorse, Ojo threatened the youths with charms and cursed them. Oba Aderiye, rather than mediating peacefully, threw his weight behind his friend, escalating the situation into a full-blown crisis.

The monarch’s abuse of power knew no bounds. He recruited traditional guards who served as his thugs, deploying them to harass innocent people within the community.
The reign of terror persisted until the police had to step in to restore order in the community.
Even the police intervention did not deter Oba Aderiye, who continued to wield his power with impunity.
The people of Ayegunle had had enough. They rose up in protest, demanding justice and accountability from their monarch.
The high chiefs, who had initially tried to intervene and restore peace to the community, were also victims of abuse and detention. The situation became untenable, and the people of Ayegunle were left with no choice but to take drastic action.
The dethronement of Oba Aderiye is a welcome relief to the people of Ayegunle. Chief Olugola, the Eesa of Ayegunle Ekiti, said the ouster of the monarch was long overdue. “We only waited to buy time, thinking he would repent from his evil ways and allow peace and tranquility to reign in our community. But we saw a defiant man who, blinded by power, forgot that the sovereignty of an Oba is in the custody of the people.”
The people of Ayegunle are finally free from the grip of a monarch who ruled with an iron fist. The town can now begin to heal and rebuild, and the people can look forward to a brighter future, free from the fear of abuse and oppression.
This dethronement of Oba Aderiye is a testament to the power of the people and their determination to stand up against injustice and abuse of power.
As the news of the monarch’s dethronement spreads, the people of Ayegunle are breathing a sigh of relief. They are finally free to live their lives without fear of persecution and abuse.
The town is expected to return to normalcy, with shops reopening and economic activities resuming. The people of Ayegunle are hopeful that the new era will bring peace, prosperity, and development to their community.
The story of Ayegunle serves as a reminder that power is not absolute, and that the people ultimately hold the reins. The dethronement of Oba Aderiye is a testament to the power of collective action and the determination of a people to stand up against injustice.
As the town begins to heal and rebuild, it is hoped that the lessons learned from this experience will not be forgotten, and that the people of Ayegunle will continue to stand up for their rights and demand accountability from their leaders.
