Senate suspends Natasha for six months

Maverick politician, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has been suspended for six months by the Nigerian Senate.

This is sequel to allegations of misconduct related to her accusations of sexual harassment against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

The suspension, recommended by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, includes the withdrawal of her salary, security details, and a ban from the National Assembly premises ¹.

The controversy began when Akpoti-Uduaghan submitted a petition to the Senate, accusing Akpabio of misconduct.

However, instead of investigating her claims, the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions focused on her alleged breach of Senate rules.

Interestingly, a Federal High Court in Abuja had issued an interim order stopping the Senate Committee from investigating Akpoti-Uduaghan, pending further judicial review .

Despite this, the Senate proceeded with the suspension.

The suspension has sparked debate, with some questioning the Senate’s handling of the situation and others arguing that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions were unbecoming of a senator.
