Engr Dr Abdul-Hammed
By Yakubu Dati
Leadership in a pioneering institution comes with unique demands. Beyond routine administration, it requires vision, resilience, and the ability to build systems from the ground up. As the tenure of Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hammed, the pioneer Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede (FEDPOLY Ayede), draws to a close, attention naturally turns to how his administration, working alongside the Registrar, Akin Odesola, and the institution’s other Principal Officers, navigated complex challenges to establish a lasting institutional foundation.
FEDPOLY Ayede emerged at a time when Nigeria’s tertiary education sector was under pressure from funding constraints, rising enrolment demands, and heightened expectations for technical and vocational training. For a newly established federal polytechnic, these challenges were compounded by the need to simultaneously develop academic programmes, infrastructure, administrative systems, and institutional culture. The task before the pioneer leadership was not merely to manage, but to create.
His ability to manage the complexity of entrenched dynamics of socio-political fault lines successfully remains a shining legacy.
Under Engr. Dr. Abdul-Hammed’s stewardship, emphasis was placed on structure and process. Academic and administrative frameworks were carefully developed to ensure order, accountability, and sustainability. With the support of Dr Tunji Alausa, the Hon Minister of Education and his counterpart, Prof Suwaiba Ahmed, the Minister of State, academic programmes were strengthened, internal governance mechanisms clarified, and professional standards reinforced. These foundational efforts helped prevent the instability that often afflicts new institutions and provided a clear operational direction.
His transparency attracted interventions from the Executive Secretary of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), under the inspirational leadership of Arc. Sonny S.T. Echono who supported Infrastructural development resulting in more than a dozen physical structures at the permanent site in Ayede.
Other institutions established at the same have operated from temporary sites due to infrastructural challenges . The Ayede Polytechnic is no exception. based on infrastructural challenges, the polytechnic has built more than 15 (fifteen) blocks and infrastructural facilities at the permanent site.
The take off and temporary site at Iresa pupa is fully functional with about 2,000 (two thousand students), an unprecedented number as the permanent site has been completed.
The physical inspection by non other than the Kaabiyesi His Imperial Majesty,Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye,Orumagege 111, Soun Ogbomoso attested to the Rector’s commitment to developing the permanent site at Ayede.
Though constrained by resources, the Rector has reflected strategic prioritisation. Rather than pursuing rapid but unsustainable expansion, the administration focused on functional facilities that supported teaching, learning, and administration. Incremental improvements across the campus contributed to a growing sense of identity and purpose for both staff and students, reinforcing confidence in the institution’s future.
Equally significant was the leadership approach adopted during this formative period. Engr. Dr. Abdul-Hammed’s calm, consultative style, complemented by the diligence of the Principal Officers, promoted dialogue and consensus-building. Engagement with staff, students, host communities, and regulatory bodies was approached with openness, helping to manage tensions and maintain relative stability in an often volatile sector.
Engr. Dr. Taofeek Adekunle Abdul-Hammed is an accomplished engineer, academic, and administrator with a proven record of institution-building and public service. As Pioneer Rector of the Federal Polytechnic, Ayede, he successfully established academic, administrative, and governance structures for a new federal institution, ensuring stability, quality assurance, and strategic growth. His leadership combined technical expertise with sound policy implementation and stakeholder engagement. With deep experience in higher education management and a strong commitment to human capital development, Engr. Dr. Abdul-Hammed is well positioned to contribute meaningfully to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, particularly in technical education reform and institutional development at the national level.
The collective nature of the achievements recorded during this tenure is central to its legacy. Progress at FEDPOLY Ayede was not driven by individual authority alone, but by coordinated leadership and shared responsibility. Systems were institutionalised, policies aligned with long-term goals, and a culture of perseverance gradually embedded.
