Baobab takes capacity enhancement drive to Kano

Baobab for Women’s Human Rights (BAOBAB) recently conducted a two-day capacity enhancement workshop for first responders to sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) in Kano state.

The workshop, held from March 16-17, 2023, was made possible with funding support from the MacArthur Foundation.

That move aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of first responders, including healthcare providers, law enforcement officials, and social workers, in addressing SGBV cases in Kano state.

Participants underwent intensive training sessions, covering topics such as core concepts of SGBV, legislation and policy frameworks, and the Kano model of prevention and response to SGBV.

A key focus of the workshop was the importance of domesticating the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act (VAPP Act) in Kano state.

Participants also discussed challenges to transformative partnerships in ending SGBV and reviewed their advocacy strategies for engaging with communities, duty bearers, and gatekeepers.

Beneficiaries of the workshop reported significant improvements in their knowledge and skills, which they believe will have a lasting impact on their work.

The workshop’s success demonstrates BAOBAB’s commitment to strengthening the capacity of first responders and promoting a comprehensive approach to addressing SGBV in Kano state.

The event aligns with the group’s mission to promote women’s human rights and challenge discriminatory practices and policies.

According to BAOBAB’s Executive Director, Yèyé Bunmi Dipo-Salami, the group remains dedicated to supporting initiatives that advance the rights and well-being of women and girls in Nigeria.
